Man hospitalized after rollover in town of Amnicon

An Idaho man remains in good condition at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth after a one-vehicle rollover in the town of Amnicon early Saturday.

Joseph Lee Anderson, 27, was badly injured when the truck he was driving rolled over at Bayfield Road and County Highway E, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Department report. He was ejected from the vehicle and found facedown next to the road.

Anderson was one of about 25 people who were found drinking on the attached deck of a nearby bar at 2:50 a.m. that day and told by deputies to leave, the report stated. A first responder with the Poplar Volunteer Fire Department, who is Anderson's roommate, told deputies that Anderson called for a ride home. When the first responder arrived at the bar to give his roommate a lift, Anderson instead drove away, saying he didn't want to leave his vehicle at the bar.

Deputies could detect an odor of alcohol coming from Anderson at the site of the accident. He was transported to St. Mary's via Gold Cross Ambulance because the closest helicopter transport was 40 minutes away, according to the report. Members of the Amnicon Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

Police ID victim of Boise Paper accident

Police have released the name of a man who died Monday in what appears to be an industrial accident at Boise Paper in International Falls.

Medical personnel and police were called to Boise about 10:55 a.m. for an unknown medical emergency inside the company. Police say upon arrival they found Nikolas Charles Kochaniuk, 51, of International Falls unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Kochaniuk was employed by a contractor working at the mill.

"They were doing some special maintenance work on a brick wall in a building where a kiln is located," Boise Paper spokesman Bob Anderson said Tuesday.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified and will investigate the death, Anderson said.

Parts of Ironwood evacuated for natural gas leak

About 75 homes and a day-care center were evacuated for several hours Tuesday in Ironwood in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when a construction crew severed a 4-inch natural gas pipeline at Lake and Cell streets.

The break closed several roads and interrupted gas service to about 300 homes. Electricity was cut to part of the area as Xcel Energy crews worked on the gas leak, according to the Ironwood Department of Public Safety.

Electricity and gas service were restored to most areas by 3 p.m. and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
