Duluth firefighters and Gold Cross ambulance personnel responded to Goodwill Industries, 700 Garfield Ave., on Wednesday morning after four employees working in the same section of the building became ill.

Duluth Assistant Fire Chief Erik Simonson said firefighters were called at 11:24 a.m. to check for possible carbon monoxide poisoning because four people in the building were experiencing similar symptoms of nausea and generally not feeling well.

No carbon monoxide was detected in the building, and levels of carbon monoxide in the blood of the individuals who became ill were insignificant, Simonson said. All four were taken to Duluth hospitals to be checked out, he said.

Doug Carlson, Goodwill's safety director, said the incident was handled properly.

"The Duluth Fire Department and ambulance personnel thoroughly inspected the area of the building affected and assessed the condition of the workers," Carlson said in a statement.
