Major power outages affected parts of the Duluth area this morning as heavy snow fell on the Northland.

More than 6,000 customers were affected at the peak of the outages earlier today, according to Minnesota Power's online outage reporting system. As of 6:20 a.m., more than 4,700 customers remained without power.

By 7:30 a.m., fewer than 100 customers remained without power.

Minnesota Power's online outage map indicated that the Hillside, Kenwood, Chester Park and UMD areas of Duluth were affected. The Island Lake and Rice Lake areas north of Duluth also have experienced outages this morning, along with some customers near Esko.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the outages.
