With a foot of new snow already on the ground in parts of the Twin Ports, the National Weather Service in Duluth has extended a winter storm warning until midnight, especially for higher terrain between Duluth and Two Harbors.
Lake effect snow was developing over western Lake Superior and was moving over land this evening, potentially adding a few inches of new snow to a storm that's already lasted 24 hours.
By 4 p.m about 13 inches had fallen at Hawk Ridge in Duluth since Monday evening, with about 11 inches at the Duluth airport and more than 10 inches near Cloquet and Two Harbors.
The storm has put Duluth over the 50-inch mark for the snow season so far.
"It looks like a nice white Christmas," said Denby Harris said, pausing as he shoveled a Park Point driveway this morning. "The problem is making room for all this snow."

Schools in Duluth, Superior, Hermantown and Proctor are closed today because of the snow, while others started late.
Holiday travel
Another snowstorm is expected to hit southwestern Minnesota, southern Wisconsin and Iowa on Thursday but remain well south of the Twin Ports.
Travel conditions are expected to be generally good later in the week across the Northland and temperatures will be near normal, with highs in the upper teens and lows in the single digits for Christmas weekend -- just a bit below normal.
