BAYFIELD -- The Madeline Island ice road still is not open to traffic.
Arnie Nelson, who maintains the two-mile frozen road linking Bayfield and LaPointe, said Friday afternoon that most of the route is in good shape -- but there's a stubborn pressure ridge blocking traffic about 300 feet off the Bayfield shore.
Madeline Island residents have been driving across the channel up to the crack, then parking their cars on the ice and walking the rest of the way.
Nelson said that if weather conditions cooperate -- and if the pressure ridge stops moving -- there are hopes of opening the ice road later this week.
In the meantime, windsleds remain in operation for those heading to the island.
