St. Luke's has turned to its emergency room for its new chief medical officer.

Dr. Nicholas Van Deelen, who has practiced emergency medicine at the hospital for 22 years, also was appointed vice president of medical affairs, St. Luke's announced in a news release. He replaces Dr. Gary Peterson, who had served in that role since 2001.

Van Deelen will continue to practice in the emergency department on a limited basis.

Van Deelen also serves as chief of staff elect for the hospital. He has been named St. Luke's Physician of the Year by the St. Luke's Foundation and has earned a John B. Sanford Community Service award from the Lake Superior Medical Society.
