Earlier this month, Essentia Health opened an orthopedic-only urgent care location near Duluth's Miller Hill Mall.

The urgent care, located at 1301 Miller Trunk Highway, offers immediate orthopedic treatment for people age 12 and older. It's the "first point of contact" to determine the scope and severity of injuries, according to an Essentia spokesperson.

Orthopedic injuries involve the musculoskeletal system. Sprains, strains and broken bones are common types of injuries and can be treated at the new location.

The urgent care is open 3-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The nontraditional hours reflect when orthopedic injuries typically occur, the release read.

“Orthopedic injuries don’t always occur on a 9-to-5 basis. They happen on the sporting field. They happen at home. They happen recreationally. We’re meeting the needs of our community and athletes with quick access to care,” Kurt Radke, operations administrator at Essentia, said in the release.

Before the new facility opened, Essentia offered orthopedic care in its Medical Orthopedics Department where people can schedule appointments to receive care. But the new location allows walk-ins.

An athletic trainer works at the location, as well as providers and radiation technologists.

The urgent cares joins several other Essentia endeavors that are slated to open. The Essentia Wellness Center in Hermantown is scheduled to open in October, and its fitness and therapy center is moving to the former Younkers store in the mall and is set to open this fall. These are all in addition to Essentia's ongoing Vision Northland project, which is a major, three-year hospital development in downtown Duluth.
