The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has tweaked a new lake trout fishing regulation announced last week for Mukooda Lake near Crane Lake. The new rule calls for catch-and-release fishing only for lake trout on Mukooda effective for 18 months beginning Wednesday .

In its regulation announced earlier, the DNR said anglers could not have in possession lake trout from any other body of water. That has now changed. The new rule reads, "It is unlawful for anyone to have in possession, regardless of where taken, any lake trout while stopping on or fishing in these waters. A person who is in transit and passing through Mukooda Lake, taking the most direct route back to the person's lodging or docking, and not fishing, may possess lake trout if the species were legally taken from other waters."

The change was made to allow lake trout anglers returning from Canadian waters to pass through Mukooda Lake on their way home. Anglers traveling by snowmobile from Canada to Crane Lake use a system of overland trails and cross Mukooda Lake to avoid unreliable ice in the narrows between Sand Point and Crane lakes.
