Goodbye, Lionel Richie and Maroon 5, hello University of Minnesota Duluth hockey: Red Rock Radio's hot adult contemporary station in Duluth is scheduled to switch formats to sports radio next month.
92.1 The Fan, formerly NU92 and formally WWAX-FM, goes live March 2 and will carry programming from KFXN-FM in Minneapolis - including the Power Trip Morning Show, Paul Allen, "The Common Man" Dan Cole and Dan Barreiro - in addition to UMD hockey and football, local high school sports and the Minnesota Wild.
The programming will be simulcast on KQDS-AM 1490, according to promotions manager Karina Bite.
This will be the first FM-based sports radio station in the Duluth-Superior market.
The Fan will carry UMD men's hockey games starting with the March 6-7 series against Western Michigan. UMD men's hockey had been broadcast on another Red Rock station, KZIO-FM 94X.

WWAX last subtly shifted formats from adult contemporary to hot adult contemporary in 2010. The playlist on NU92 included acts such as Taylor Swift, Mumford & Sons and Phillip Phillips.
