A $50,000 donation from Essentia Health will aid the conversion of the former 4th Street Market into an indigenous food market, according to a news release from the American Indian Community Housing Organization (AICHO).
The gift will be used to purchase start-up equipment and supporter farmers’ market activities while the Niiwin Indigenous Food Market is being developed, according to AICHO.
The agency purchased the former corner store at 102 E. Fourth St. in the Central Hillside last July. It plans a market, deli and coffee shop with community education and meeting space at the location.
AICHO previously announced that “pop-up” events will take place at the site this year, but that the market itself isn’t scheduled to open until early 2020.
