Carlton County 911 service restored; phone, Internet service still disrupted

Telephone and Internet service in Carlton County was disrupted shortly before noon today, and while residential service is still spotty, centralized emergency dispatch services were restored as of about 8 p.m., county officials said.

An underground line was accidentally severed by a contractor who was working on a sewer line iine in Proctor, according to Carrie Amman, a spokeswoman for CenturyLink.

"We are aware of the fiber cut in the area. We are working quickly to resolve this issue," a tweet from CenturyLink to the Cloquet Police Department said .

CenturyLink originally estimated a repair would be completed by about 7 p.m. Affected communities include Cloquet, Barnum and Moose Lake.

A county spokesman said 911 test calls from various locations were successful this evening.

Anyone who cannot get through to 911 should call the following numbers:

  • Law enforcement can be reached at 485-8404 in Moose Lake and 389-6262 in Barnum. People also may call 911 via cell phone, but 879- and 878- prefix land lines are not currently working.
