More king-sized freighters will be seen on the Great Lakes soon because of a shipbuilding boom triggered by the demand for steel and coal shipments from Duluth-Superior to lower lakes ports. At least five more 1,000-footers will be constructed under current contracts.

A program announced yesterday will bring 100 to 175 Japanese students each year to the seven schools affiliated with the Lake Superior Association of Colleges and Universities. A pilot group of students will arrive in Duluth this July. News Tribune, March 5, 1994

Ken Foxworth, UMD's African American student services coordinator, plans to run from St. Paul to Duluth next week to raise money for scholarships for minority students. Foxworth has been training since August for the 150-mile "Run for Excellence."

The 42 cases of AIDS reported in St. Louis County since 1982 make the Northland the largest pocket for the disease outside the Twin Cities area.
