FARGO-Michelle Rook will join AgweekTV as anchor, effective April 30, 2018. Rook has worked for Agweek as a freelance television and magazine reporter since 2016.
"Growing up on a dairy and diversified grain farm by Watertown (S.D.), Agweek has been a part of our family farming operation for years. Working with AgweekTV the past two years as a freelance reporter really sparked my interest to anchor the show and grow its ag news and presence across our region and the nation. I am excited for the opportunity to work on AgweekTV and assist in bringing farmers and ranchers the ag news and market information that will help them in their business." Rook said.
Rook serves as the farm director and market reporter for WNAX radio in Yankton, S.D., a position she will continue while growing her anchor role at AgweekTV. WNAX is a leader in farm radio in North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
"We're excited to have Michelle join our team, both for her passion for agriculture combined with her journalism expertise. She brings a fresh, enthusiastic approach to deliver high-quality agriculture news to our viewers and region every week," said Katie Pinke, Agweek's general manager and publisher.
At WNAX, Rook produces and anchors 40-plus live daily agricultural news and market shows with analysis, and she has interviewed top regional and national newsmakers, including President Barack Obama in an exclusive 2009 interview, and five U.S. ag secretaries. Rook regularly reports from state and national farm and commodity group meetings and conventions, travels to Washington D.C. to cover farm policy and covers international trade missions. She will continue regional, national and international reporting in her AgweekTV role, in addition to her WNAX markets and ag news reporting.
Previously, Rook worked as a meteorologist, reporter and back-up anchor for 13 years across three television stations in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Sioux City, Iowa. She has worked as a reporter for Farm Journal Media, as well as with numerous farm groups in her venture Heartland Ag and Consumer Network, which produces television news segments about agriculture targeted to non-ag audiences.
Rook's work is recognized across agriculture. She was awarded the South Dakota Governor's Ag Ambassador Award in 2016, the Doan Award Winner for Reporting in 2015, National Association of Farm Broadcasters National Farm Broadcaster of the Year in 2008 and NAFB Horizon Award Winner in 2002. In 2006, she served as the president of NAFB and chaired Washington Watch in 2015 and 2016.
Rook holds a master's degree in journalism and mass communications and bachelor's degrees in ag journalism and dairy manufacturing, all from South Dakota State University, as well as a certificate of broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University.
