Iron ore shipped on the Great Lakes totaled 5.8 million tons in October, up 5.7 percent since the same time last year, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association.

The association said the October iron ore shipments were above the month’s 5-year average by almost 9 percent.

Year-to-date iron ore totals reached 44.7 million tons through last month, down 1.8 percent compared to the same point last year. However, year-to-date shipments are catching up to last year’s figure after being down by 14 percent through April of this year.
