Northern Waters restaurant on Woodland Avenue is closing at the end of the year, and a new eatery will take its spot shortly after.

After a "rewarding and creative process" spanning not quite two years in business, co-owners Eric and Lynn Goerdt said they want to refocus their attention on the booming Northern Waters Smokehaus in Canal Park.

"We're continuing to grow at the Smokehaus with our expanding delivery service, catering and mail order," Eric Goerdt said in a news release Monday. "Last December, we sent to every state in the country - it's clear this needs our full attention to represent the region well."

The restaurant opened in 2016 as an expansion of the Canal Park deli, which opened in 2001. Goerdt said even as "I saw myself spreading too thin between the two places," the decision to close was not an easy one.

"We didn't come to this decision lightly, as staff and customers are like family," he said. The staff wants "to go out with a bang making the next few weeks absolutely the best for customers in terms of food and service. I am incredibly touched by this."

The restaurant, at 1608 Woodland Ave. in the Mount Royal Shopping Center, will be open through Dec. 31. Any unused gift certificates will be honored at the Smokehaus, which is located in the DeWitt-Seitz Building.

No details are yet available on the new restaurant planned for the Mount Royal space, though Goerdt said the roughly 30 staffers at Northern Waters will be eyed for jobs there.
