  • Construction of a new taconite dock in the Twin Ports is an option under consideration by Burlington Northern Inc. to handle increased trade expected from the new processing plants on the Iron Range. Modernization of existing facilities is also a possibility.
  • The $2.6 million UMD Performing Arts Building will be dedicated and opened to the public on Sunday, Feb. 3. The opening will launch a series of theater, music, dance and film events at the facility running through March 12.

  • An official from the National Steel Pellet Co. taconite plant in Keewatin said yesterday the plant probably won't reopen. National idled the plant indefinitely on Oct. 18 after the company and United Steelworkers of America failed to reach a labor agreement.
  • The Union Gospel Mission of Duluth wants to build a $6 million "Hope Center" to provide temporary housing for women and children going through divorce or other problems. They're hoping to purchase the Cobb Elementary School for the project.
