A new smoked fish and ice cream shop opened in Two Harbors on Sunday, July 1.
Lou's Fish House has been renovated by the new owners Rebecca Swanson, along with her two oldest daughters, Callie, 18, and Ashleigh, 16. The shop features a variety of smoked fish and hand-scooped ice cream.
Rebecca first noticed the fish house and its motel last summer when she was looking for a property management opportunity.
"I had interest in another location, but then we had to drive our son up to Silver Bay for a soccer game and I just drove by and was like, 'Oh my goodness, right there. I want that,'" Rebecca said. "I knew it had six rooms, so we did some checking on it and went forward from there. It was a lot of paperwork to acquire it. So, February we closed and got to work."
The smokehouse side of the business came about in a roundabout way. The Swansons were originally planning on renting out the retail side, but after a deal fell through, the family decided to rededicate the space. At first, Ashleigh and Callie planned to open an ice cream shop there.
"Before we knew it, we were talking about having a small cooler of smoked fish, just to keep with the tradition of the place," Ashleigh said. "But then we kept talking and before we knew it, we were smoking all of our fish and not doing as much ice cream, but we do have both."
Ashleigh and her sister are learning about the smoking process from their mentor, Stan Hanson, of the former Superior Choice Fish.
The shop is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. More information about Lou's Fish House can be found at lousfishhouse.com.
