Once again we are faced with gun violence in our country. The news of these mass shootings is painfully horrific, and our hearts go out to the 26 innocent children and adults brutally killed in Texas. But let us not only pray but also act in courageous, faithful, and smart ways to work for an end to gun violence — even if some people think that is wishful thinking. Those people can remember that history is full of "foolish" ideas that became the wisdom of the day.
People of faith always have been called by God to welcome the stranger and to build bridges rather than walls with others, especially those who flee violence, rape, the threat of death, separation of families and impossible living conditions. In anxious times, there always have been those who use fear and degradation to summon the worst impulses we may have rather than the greatest power, the power of love and understanding.
