AUSTIN — An Austin pastor accused of bilking an 82-year-old woman with dementia out of more than $40,000 has been ordered to pay $17,000 restitution and placed on 10 years’ probation. The Rev. David Vernon DeFor had been charged in June 2013 with four felony counts of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. He pleaded guilty in June 2014 to one of the counts; in exchange for the plea, the other three were dismissed. The sentence was handed down Friday in Mower County District Court.
BYRON, Minn. -- A Rochester, Minn., man is recovering from injuries he received after authorities say he stole a vehicle, ran from them, then fought with a police dog. The 25-year-old allegedly stole a pickup Thursday afternoon; when an Olmsted County sheriff’s deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, the man fled first in the truck, then bailed out and ran off. Officers surrounded the area in the 6500 block of 19th Street Northwest in Kalmar Township, assisted by a police dog from Rochester.
A Rochester woman has been charged with felony animal cruelty after police say she threw a kitten off a third-floor balcony. Nia Finesse Taylor, 24, made her first appearance Monday in Olmsted County District Court. The charge stems from an incident in September, when officers responded to a report of a domestic assault at an apartment building. There, a man told them he’d gotten into an argument with one of his roommates, Taylor.
