SAN ANTONIO — The Valero Texas Open in San Antonio has developed a reputation of being an event where golfers who were close to winning on the PGA Tour finally find a way to break through. That standing was enhanced on Sunday when Texas native Andrew Landry fashioned a 4-under-par 68 to finish at 17-under 271 and post a two-shot victory at the TPC San Antonio's demanding Oaks Course, in the process capturing his first career win in his 32nd PGA Tour start.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Pulling on the black-and-garnet cap of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as he headed out to warm up Friday afternoon made an impression on Twins pitcher Aaron Slegers. "That was extremely special," Slegers said after starting and working two scoreless innings in the Grapefruit League opener, a 4-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
MINNEAPOLIS — Twenty-six years later, Minnesota got it right: the hype, the parties, the logistics and the halftime entertainment. And as luck would have it, we got the game, too. We even had a guy do a flip on Nicollet Mall on his snowmobile. Let's see you do that, Miami. From Sunday to Sunday, anywhere from 125,000 to a million souls wandered through the Twin Cities for Super Bowl LII — depending on which set of projections you trust — and anyone who got on a plane to return home Monday will have nothing to say about Minnesota that we don't already say.
MINNEAPOLIS — Jon Gruden tried to warn all 32 teams about passing on Case Keenum. Before the 2012 NFL Draft, Gruden sat down with Keenum as a part of ESPN's Jon Gruden's QB Camp, a recurring segment in which coach and quarterback chitchat as they watch film together. Keenum had just finished a prolific career at the University of Houston, setting NCAA records for passing yards (19,217) and passing touchdowns (155).
AVONDALE, Ariz.—Matt Kenseth claimed his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win of 2017 in the next-to-last race of the season. Kenseth took his final lead of the race with a pass of Chase Elliott with nine laps remaining in his penultimate race with Joe Gibbs Racing and won the Can-Am 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Elliott held off Martin Truex Jr. to take the runner-up spot, but it wasn't enough to advance to the Championship Four of the playoffs next Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
HOUSTON -- Cody Bellinger ripped an RBI double in the ninth inning to put the Los Angeles Dodgers ahead, and the Dodgers squared the World Series with a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros in Game 4 on Saturday night at Minute Maid Park. The series is tied 2-2.
SAINT PAUL — Mikko Koivu's re-direction of a Mike Reilly feed 9:03 into the third period held up as the difference maker, lifting the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. Reilly zipped a pass across the offensive zone to Koivu, who tipped the puck low between the knees of Penguins goalie Matt Murray. The Wild have now won two in a row for their first winning streak of the season. Minnesota (4-3-2) also got a Daniel Winnik goal and Devan Dubnyk had 29 saves as the Wild have now won their last three meetings with Pittsburgh.
MIAMI — Extremely dangerous Hurricane Irma first crashed into the Florida Keys on Sunday morning and then made a second landfall on Marco Island on Florida's west coast Sunday afternoon, unleashing violent wind gusts up to 142 mph and storm-surge flooding. The storm was plowing up Florida's west coast Sunday night and, once it's over, forecasters feared that this storm will go down as one of the worst in the state's history.
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Twins aren't saying for the moment, but it's likely that the trade Sunday morning of left-handed starter Jaime Garcia to the New York Yankees has bought outfielder Zack Granite more time on the 25-man roster to prove he belongs.
BEDMINSTER, N.J. — All week long, Sung Hyun Park was in the shadows like a lioness stalking her prey. She emerged Sunday night to be crowned the U.S. Women's Open champion. The 23-year-old South Korean fired a 5-under-par 67 at the Old Course at Trump National Golf Club to win the 72nd edition of the oldest major championship in women's golf. She completed the 72 holes at 11-under 277. Seventeen-year old Hye-Jin Choi of South Korea, who was trying to become the second amateur to win a Women's Open title, finished second after a 1-under 71 for a 9-under 279.
