Beset by rain and melting snow, Northwestern Wisconsin’s iconic American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race is in jeopardy, race officials acknowledged Tuesday. At best, participants in the 44th Birkie will compete in a one-way, timed race from Cable to Sawyer County Highway OO — the halfway point of the traditional race course that ends in Hayward. Calling it “a very slim chance,” race officials said some snow remained on the northern half of the trail.
A two-story home at 1915 Ogden Ave. in Superior was a total loss following a fire Wednesday evening. Crews arrived to find everyone out of the home, with fire and smoke showing from second-story windows in the rear of the house, a Superior Fire Department news release said.

The attorney for a Cook County farmer said Wednesday his client will appeal a State District Court decision that paves the way for state inspection of the farmer's raw-milk operation. An appeal has not yet been filed with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, but attorney Zenas Baer said the farmer, David Berglund, owner of Lake View Natural Dairy near Grand Marais, expects to fight Judge Michael Cuzzo's decision from March 11.
