STARR COUNTY, Texas — A convicted pedophile from Halstad in northwest Minnesota has been caught near the Mexican border after being missing for more than a month. Jonah James Hawkins, 26, was taken into custody in Starr County, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Corrections. He had been a fugitive since June 27, when he absconded from supervised release, the DOC said.
STURGIS, S.D.—The first official fatality of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally occurred Sunday, Aug. 6, when a car and a semi collided, killing the 25-year-old driver of the car from Manti, Utah. The man was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla northbound on U.S. Highway 85 about 11 miles south of Buffalo and crossed center line, according to the Department of Public Safety. A southbound semi driven by a 44-year-old man from Dickinson, N.D., swerved to try to miss the car but the vehicles collided. Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Their names were not released.
STURGIS, S.D.—The 77th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicked off on Friday, Aug. 4, for its nine-day run through Saturday, Aug. 12.. The vendors who line the streets in the Black Hills of South Dakota city are up this year, according to public information officer Christina Steele, with 609 as of Friday compared to 588 last year. Vendors line many of the town's city streets, including Main Street which this past year underwent a major upgrading.
LACRESCENT, Minn. -- Names of the suspects and officers in a gunfight between police and two Wisconsin teenagers in southeast Minnesota have been released. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said the suspects in the incident in Houston County were Wyatt Robert Helfrich, 19, of La Crosse, Wis., who is in the La Crosse County (Wis.) Jail and William Gerald Wallraff, 19, of Holmen, Wis., who is in the Houston County Jail.

LONG PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Long Prairie Police Department found a suspect in the apparent killing of a woman about 14 hours later at the north-central Minnesota town’s hospital after he sought treatment there Friday morning. Police Chief Kevin Langer said Jose Raul Herrera Torres, 35, who was last seen with a woman around 5:30 p.m.Thursday outside a residence in Long Prairie, had pretty serious injuries.
WASECA, Minn. -- Thousands of carp died last month in Waseca County’s Lake Elysian because of a virus likely introduced by the release or escape of a pet goldfish or ornamental koi. The University of Minnesota and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources determined koi herpesvirus was the main cause of the late June fish kill in southern Minnesota. It was the first documented case of the virus in a wild fish population.
MINNEAPOLIS -- A 31-year-old Minneapolis man has died and his passenger is fighting for her life after their vehicle flew off an overpass bridge and then landed on Interstate 94 in Minneapolis. Floyd Cunningham died in the fiery Wednesday night crash, while his passenger, Lancha Robertson, 37, of Minneapolis, has life-threatening injuries and is at North Memorial Hospital.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Country singer Garth Brooks is continuing to show his popularity in South Dakota and surrounding states. He added three more shows Thursday and almost immediately sold them out, according to his promoter and officials at the Denny Sanford Premier Center where Brooks will do a total of nine shows from Friday, Sept. 15, to Sunday, Sept. 24.
ALCESTER, S.D. — A third person has died from injuries sustained in a fatal crash at a southeast South Dakota nursing home and rehab center.. Resident Pearl “Tex” Sowell, 95, died Thursday, July 27.. He was one of seven people hit Monday when a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by an 81-year-old woman ran into the group of employees and residents as they were doing outdoors aerobics exercises at the Alcester Care and Rehab Center.
