SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Emma was the most popular name for newborn girls at Sanford Health’s 44 hospitals in 2017, while Jackson topped the list for boys. The other top four names were Lillian (Lily), Abigail (Abby), Nora (Norah) and Harper. For boys, the other top four names were Grayson (Greyson), Henry, Liam and Theodore. Emma and Jackson were also the most popular name across the health system in 2015.
ST. PAUL -- Fire deaths have increased 30 percent in Minnesota so far this year to 56, and officials are worried about the historically dangerous holiday season. Last year at this time, there were 42 fire deaths. In 2015, there were 57 deaths, the highest number since 2002 when there were 64. The state’s all-time low figure was 35 in 2009 and the highest was 134 in 1976.
BISMARCK -- Woodbury Financial Services Inc., a broker-dealer with headquarters in Oakdale, Minn., has agreed to pay $596,373 to 66 North Dakota investors victimized in a ponzi scheme operated by Kevin Wanner while he was an agent of the firm, according to state Securities Commissioner Karen Tyler.
MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the person injured during an officer-involved shooting incident that happened on Tuesday afternoon at Minneapolis City Hall. Marcus Fischer, 18, of Minneapolis is being treated for his injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center. His condition was not released.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Officials started using sound cannons on Tuesday, Dec. 19, to scare off Canada geese from the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of geese flying in and out of open fields to the west of the airport to prevent geese from striking windshields on jets or being sucked into engines.
CUSTER, S.D. -- An estimated 230 firefighters appear to be getting a handle on the wildfire that has been raging across Custer State Park in the southern Black Hills as of Friday, Dec. 15, with snow in the forecast for the weekend. The Legion Lake fire that has burned an estimated 53,875 acres since Monday was listed as 53 percent contained, a big improvement since the figure was at only 7 percent on Wednesday.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A 75-year-old Park Rapids man has died and three teenagers were injured in a crash on an icy, snow-covered state Highway 71 about 16 miles south of Bemidji. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2002 Subaru Legacy driven by Elise Sikes, 18, of Hudson, Wis., was driving south on U.S. Highway 71 Thursday morning about 9:50 a.m when it lost control and collided with a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle heading north driven by the 75-year-old man.
BENSON, Minn. — Minnesota's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into the death of a man who died last week after a fall at the Benson Power plant in central Minnesota. Almost a week later, the police have not yet released the name of the individual, though the family has been notified. The investigation into the incident is ongoing with OSHA, said Benson police on Wednesday, so the name isn't being released.

REDBY, Minn. --- The FBI has issued a fugitive alert looking for Derek Jon Paddy, who is believed to have fled Red Lake Indian Reservation in northwest Minnesota after an armed robbery and shooting. The 21-year-old is considered armed and dangerous. According to a warrant, Paddy was involved in an armed robbery on the reservation on Thanksgiving Day and then was reported as a shooter in an incident on Thursday, Nov. 30.
