A common loon sits on its nest on a lake near Remer. Evolved to catch fish, loons have their legs far back on their bodies, a great design for swimming but one resulting in awkward movement on land. They typically go ashore only to mate and nest. Steve Kuchera / skuchera@duluthnews.com
