Wayne Jensen says he's lost more than 15 feet of beach along his South Shore Lake Superior waterfront property near Port Wing since water levels pushed above normal levels in 2014. Jensen said huge chunks of clay are eroding off his land into the lake due to wind and wave action, muddying what had been clear water. Lake Superior is nearly a foot above normal and near record highs for this time of year. Photo courtesy Wayne Jensen

Claire Pettit of Denton, Texas, shares this photo of a beautiful Monarch butterfly she saw on Minnesota Point. Pettit, who is spending the summer in Duluth, writes, “I was out walking my dog, Cleo, with my parents when we stumbled across this amazing creature resting among some sticks and old pieces of driftwood. It's not every day that one sees one of these rare butterflies, so I snapped a quick picture.”

The 12th Street Beach on Park Point was a popular place to be Monday afternoon as temperatures soared into the 80s for the third straight day. The heat won't last much longer, though -- a big cooldown is in the forecast for later in the week, the National Weather Service reported; highs on Thursday may struggle to reach 60.
