Park Point 5-Miler set for Friday

Scott Behling of Duluth has come close to winning Minnesota’s oldest road race before, and he’ll get another chance Friday.

Behling, third a year ago and second in 2011, is among those entered in the 43rd annual Park Point 5-Miler. Behling won this year’s William A. Irvin 5K.

Among the top entries in the women’s field are 15-year-old Cloquet High School sophomore-to-be Anja Maijala, who was runner-up in this year’s Fitgers 5K, and Superior High School graduate Leah Holmes of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Online preregistration for $25 is available through today at or Race day registration costs $35 and can be done from 3-5 p.m. Friday at the pavilion.

The event begins with races for children age 14 and younger at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 2-mile walk at 6:15 p.m. and the 5-mile feature at 6:30. Net proceeds from the race benefit the Young Athletes Foundation.

Minnesota Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6:15-7:30 p.m.

Brykaliuk on Canada’s development team

Minnesota Duluth sophomore forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk was invited earlier this week to attend Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp.

The camp, which includes 42 players, takes place Aug. 8-17 in Calgary, Alberta.

A total of 22 players will be chosen for a three-game series vs. the United States, scheduled for Aug. 21-24 in Calgary.
