Another award for UMD’s Rivard

Minnesota Duluth freshman Samantha Rivard added to her hardware haul Friday when she was named Division II’s Central Region Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.

The award, which comes from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, follows Rivard’s two-title showing at last weekend’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships, where she was victorious at both 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Her time of 16 minutes, 29.73 seconds in the 5,000 is the second-fastest in all of Division II.

Rivard, who also won the Central Region award for the indoor season, was a cross county All-American last fall.

  • Rivard, along with a trio of teammates, is headed to the Division II outdoor championships next week in Allendale, Mich. Joining her are Chanel Miller (heptathlon), Alexandra Rudin (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Dan Nielsen (3,000-meter steeplechase).

Watson falls at nationals

Chicago’s Shawndell Winter earned a 4-1 decision over Duluth’s Ryan Watson in the 201-pound heavyweight division on Thursday night at the National Golf Gloves Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas.

Watson opened the tournament with a pair of victories, beating Michigan’s Tyler Bussell on Monday, and then beating Kansas City’s Chad Williams on Wednesday.

Watson was the last remaining boxer representing the Upper Midwest, which included Minnesota and North and South Dakota.
