Prep Report: Ely falls in consolation pitching duel

Springfield won a pitcher’s duel Friday, defeating Ely 3-2 to take fifth place at the Class A state high school baseball tournament in Chaska, Minn.

Jevan Richert scattered eight hits and walked none to register the victory and outduel Ely’s Max Gantt, who threw a seven-hitter and walked three.

The Tigers (23-3) scored twice in the third inning on three straight singles, an error and a sacrifice bunt before the Timberwolves (22-4) responded with a single run in the fourth on back-to-back hits by Will Gustafson and Elliot Omerza and a throwing error.

Springfield added a run in the top of the seventh and then held on in the bottom of the inning after Louis Gerzin doubled and scored on Gustafson’s RBI single.

Ely also finished sixth at the 2012 tournament.

Ely 3, Royalton 0

Gustafson tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 12 to carry the Timberwolves to the fifth-place game earlier in the day at Athletic Park.

Gustafson walked only one and faced just 25 batters, four over the seven-inning minimum, while retiring the first 12 batters he faced. An error and single put runners on first and second base in the fifth, but Gustafson struck out three consecutive hitters.

Royalton again threatened in the seventh by putting runners at the corners before Gustafson struck out Kyle Billmeyer to end the game.

The Timberwolves totaled 11 hits, two each by Gantt, Gerzin and Tayler Banks. Gantt doubled to left-center field to drive in two runs and Gerzin doubled in Gantt in a three-run second.

  • Due to rain in today’s forecast, championship games in all three classes were rescheduled for Monday at Target Field in Minneapolis.
