Ashley Taipale tossed a complete-game three- hitter, older sister Ciarra Taipale clobbered a pair of home runs, and Duluth Denfeld toppled Ashland 10-0 on Saturday to claim its third Lake Superior Conference softball title in four seasons.

Ashley Taipale struck out 12 while running her record to 13-4. Ciarra Taipale, meanwhile, hit her fifth and sixth home runs of the season and pushed her RBI total to 30.

Duluth East wins twice in Bemidji

The Greyhounds won a pair of games Saturday at the Bemidji Invitational, 7-2 over Roseau and 2-1 over the tournament hosts.

In the opener, Taylor Velander threw five innings of two-hit ball to earn the pitching win in his first varsity start. Nick Andersen and Frankie Hanson each had a pair of hits to back Velander, who struck out five Rams and walked six.

Lucas Hedin helped East avenge a 4-1 Friday evening loss to Bemidji by quieting the Lumberjacks on Saturday. Hedin went the distance, allowing six hits. He struck out five, walked one and hit three batters. Wes Anderson drove in both of the Greyhounds’ runs.

Virginia wins Section 7A title

The Blue Devils beat the Hilltoppers in a 4-3 nailbiter to secure the Section 7A crown Saturday afternoon in Hibbing.

Saturday’s final was tight throughout, with a pair of singles matches and one doubles match coming down to a tiebreaker.

Virginia beat Hermantown 5-2 earlier in the day to advance to the title tilt, while Marshall upended Hibbing by the same score.
