Prep report: Macor pitched Carlton past Barnum in softball

Grace Macor tossed a four-hitter and struck out 16 to lead Carlton to a 4-2 Polar League high school softball victory at Barnum on Monday.

Macor also tripled in a run and Myranda Papesh had three hits and scored two runs for the Bulldogs.

Barnum pitcher Lauren Hultgren scattered seven hits and struck out five.

Duluth East 2

Jillayne Gilbert and Jordyn Thomas each had two hits and drove in two runs to back Kylie Hoff’s five-hitter in the Hawks’ home debut.

Cloquet 7, Virginia 1

Chandler Beaupre allowed five hits and struck out six in the Lumberjacks’ nonconference win at Braun Park.

Duluth Denfeld goes 2-1 at

Lakeville North Tournament

Ashley Taipale tossed two seven-hit complete games and hit home runs in each victory as the Hunters won two of three games at the Lakeville North Invitational on Saturday.

Taipale homered and drove in three runs in an 11-4 win over Andover and then hit another homer and shut down Centennial in a 4-3 victory. Denfeld also lost 6-1 to Irondale.

Willem Aldridge allowed a base hit to lead off the game and didn’t allow another the rest of the way, while going 3-for-4 at the plate in the Greyhounds’ five-inning win at Ordean Field.

Weather problems force

relaxation of 7-inning rule

The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors’ Executive Committee announced Monday it has decided to permit a relaxation of rules requiring complete seven-inning baseball and softball games, due to severe weather issues this spring.

The MSHSL emailed high school athletic directors of the policy change but asked that the provision only be used when absolutely necessary.
