First Day Hikes offered at Northland state parks
Start off the new year by enjoying the beauty of the Northland — and burn off some holiday calories — by taking part in New Year's Day hikes at Wisconsin and Minnesota state parks.
Several parks in the region are offering First Day Hikes on Monday, including:
• Pattison State Park south of Superior, 1-3 p.m. Snowshoe/hike the 2-mile Beaver Trail; meet at the shelter building near the main parking lot. Some steep hills and steps; views of Interfalls Lake, the Black River and the CCC bridge. For more information, call (715) 399-3111.
• Tettegouche State Park near Silver Bay, 1-4 p.m. Meet the park naturalist at the Tettegouche Camp parking lot on Lax Lake Road before 1 p.m. for a guided 1.7-mile hike (one way) into historic Tettegouche Camp. Hike will be canceled if the air temperature is lower than 15 below zero. For more information, contact Kurt Mead at (218) 353-8809.
• Jay Cooke State Park near Carlton, 1-2:30 p.m. Snowshoe walk in the park, with a focus on forest animals. Meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center. Child and adult snowshoes available; to reserve a pair or for more information, call (218) 673-7005. Evening snowshoe hike has been canceled due to weather.
Make sure to dress for the frigid weather, with warm clothes and proper footwear.
