College men's hockey: Cloquet's Bender to make Bulldog debut with four out due to injury

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Cloquet native Koby Bender, a freshman forward, will make his Bulldog debut tonight at St. Cloud State as Minnesota Duluth heads into its NCHC opener missing four key players due to injuries.

Senior forward Avery Peterson, sophomore forward Joey Anderson, freshman forward Nick Swaney and sophomore defenseman Jarod Hilderman are all out of tonight’s lineup due to injuries.

Peterson was injured a week ago in practice prior to the trip to Maine. Hilderman was injured in last Friday’s win over the Black Bears while Anderson and Swaney both went down during Saturday’s win in Orono. All four injuries are upper body injuries, according to coach Scott Sandelin.

Bender is listed as the right wing on the fourth line tonight with freshman wing Kobe Roth and senior center Sammy Spurrell. Senior center Jared Thomas of Hermantown is playing wing on the top line alongside junior center Peter Krieger and junior wing Parker Mackay.

Sophomore Hunter Shepard of Cohasset will get the start in goal for UMD. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports North-Plus.
