Northern Exposure hits the ice

The Northern Exposure Hockey Tournament kicks off its ninth annual event today at seven Northland arenas.

A total of 66 teams, with players ranging from age 8 to 18, descend on the area for a three-day weekend, which organizers say will pump an estimated $750,000 into Duluth’s economy.

The Northern Exposure welcomes teams from Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wisconsin, California and Canada and features three Duluth teams.

Games are scheduled through Sunday at Mars Lakeview Arena, the Heritage Center, Hermantown Arena, Superior Amateur Hockey Association arena, Northwoods Arena in Cloquet, Amsoil Arena and the DECC.

Brusehaver nominated for AFCA team

Minnesota Duluth senior defensive end Jacob Brusehaver is one of a record 182 college football players nominated for the 2014 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.

The team was established in 1992 and recognizes 22 players each year for their charitable involvement and community service contributions. It is considered one of the most coveted off-field honors in college football, with 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision selected, as well as 11 from the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA ranks. ESPN’s Lou Holtz and Kirk Herbstreit are among those on the selection panel. The team is announced in September.

Brusehaver, of Hutchinson, Minn., is going into his second year as a starter and will serve as a Bulldogs captain this fall. The two-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic selection has been active with the Boys and Girls Club of the Northland and the Damiano Center, among other groups.
