Today's prep baseball state tournament games

GRAND RAPIDS (10-15) vs. NO. 1 MAHTOMEDI (16-4)

What: Class AAA quarterfinal

Where: Siebert Field, Minneapolis

When: 10 a.m.

Outlook: The Thunderhawks are making their 18th state tournament appearance and first since 2012. They are the lone team among all the classes to enter the state tournament with a sub-.500 record, with Wayzata in Class AAAA being a game above .500 at 11-10. Grand Rapids has won five of its last six games, going 4-0 at the Section 7AAA tournament to reach state. The Hawks are led by senior Mike Heitkamp, who is hitting .394 this year. ... Mahtomedi is on a seven-game winning streak. The program is two seasons removed from an appearance in the state championship game. They finished sixth last year.

ST. CLOUD CATHEDRAL (17-8) vs. NO. 1 DULUTH MARSHALL (21-4)

What: Class AA quarterfinal

Where: Dick Putz Field, St. Cloud

When: 10 a.m.

Outlook: The Hilltoppers are making their second appearance at state after finishing fourth in their debut a year ago. Junior Ben Pedersen (6-1, 0.26 ERA, 91 strikeouts) gets the start today. He's allowed four runs — two earned — in 54 2/3 innings this season. ... The Crusaders are making their 18th appearance at state. They beat Pierz — which beat Marshall 1-0 in the semifinals last year — to win the Section 6AA title.

RUSHFORD-PETERSON (15-8) vs. NO. 3 SOUTH RIDGE (19-5)

What: Class A quarterfinal

Where: Chaska Athletic Park, Chaska

When: 5:30 p.m.

Outlook: Neither of these programs has much experience at state. Rushford-Peterson's only prior trip was in 2005. This is South Ridge's first trip. The Section 7A champion Panthers are led by senior Nick Carlson, who has a 0.85 ERA in 41 innings this season. He's a two-sport athlete in the spring, who last week took fifth in the triple jump at the state track and field meet. He'll play basketball next year at St. Scholastica. ... The Trojans, winners of Section 1, are on a six-game winning streak and led by senior Dawson Dahl, who is batting .500 this spring.
