College baseball: UMD opens season with sweep
Marcus Frederickson and Jalen Busker earned pitching wins to lead Minnesota Duluth to a 13-0 and 4-2 season-opening nonconference sweep of Bemidji State in a pair of seven-inning games Thursday night and early Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Frederickson, a senior left-hander from Eagan, Minn., allowed just two hits and struck out five in the opening-game shutout, while sophomore Drew Stewart provided all the offense he'd need with a three-run inside-the-park home run to key a six-run third inning. Henry George paced the UMD offense with three hits, a run and RBI.
Busker, a senior left-hander from Staples, Minn., pitched five strong innings in the rematch, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out four. Senior catcher Tyler Midas provided the big blow offensively, blasting a three-run home run in the fifth. Midas, George and Alex Welder each had two hits for the Bulldogs (2-0), while Gunner Olszewski, a football standout for Bemidji State, had a hit and run to lead the Beavers (0-2).
