International Falls drops opener at state tournament

St. James starting pitcher Walker Froehling threw a perfect game to beat International Falls 1-0 on Friday in the first round of the Minnesota Division II American Legion baseball state tournament in Luverne.

Froehling allowed no runs, hits or walks over seven innings with no errors from his fielders. He struck out eight International Falls’ batters.

St. James’ lone run came in the bottom of the second inning via a bases-loaded walk by International Falls starting pitcher Caleb Dahlin. He allowed three hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

International Falls plays a consolation game at 11:30 a.m. today. If Falls wins, it plays in the consolation championship at 2 p.m.


Mid-Mod Madness kicks off at ABC Raceway

The eighth annual Midwest Mod Madness takes place tonight at ABC Raceway in Ashland.

Grandstands and pit gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps start at 6:15 and the first green flag is scheduled to drop around 7. Admission is $10 for ages 13 and up. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Midwest Mod Madness will feature an enhanced purse for the WISSOTA-sanctioned division race.

Mike Truscott of Chippewa Falls, Wis., has won five of the last seven Midwest Modifieds features this season. He is the track’s all-time feature wins leader in the class having claimed 11 of the raceway’s 83 total feature wins. Truscott is second in WISSOTA’s mid-mod point standings.


Grand Rapids’ Havel inks pro deal in Sweden

Grand Rapids native Jessica Havel signed a professional contact to play goaltender for Gothenburg HC in Sweden this fall after spending the last four years at Bemidji State University.

In her four years in goal with the Beavers, Havel appeared in 30 games, totaling 1,490 minutes. She finished with a 5-17-1 record with a 3.83 goals-against average. As a senior in 2013-14, Havel made six appearances, going 1-3-0 and recording a .866 save percentage and 4.93 goals-against average.

At Grand Rapids, Havel was a finalist for Let’s Play Hockey’s Senior Goalie of the Year Award in 2009, a finalist for the Miss Goalie Award in 2008 after leading the Thunderhawks to a runner-up performance at the Class AA state tournament and being named a three-time News Tribune All-Area selection.


Champions crowned in LPGC Senior Open

A record 91 golfers took part in the Lester Park Senior Lakeview Open on Wednesday and Thursday at Lester Park Golf Course.

In the Elite Seniors Division (80-plus), Bob McKercher won the championship flight with an 86, while Bill Moser (88) and Jim Sellman (90) were next.

John Bonte and Jerry Graham both carded 81s in the championship flight of the Super Senior division (70-79) to edge Jim Torrance (82).

In the Senior Division (55-69), Dave Torrance beat Mike VanKessel and Danny Tanner in the championship flight.
