Huskies edge Honkers to open second half

And just like that, the Duluth Huskies are undefeated and in first place.

The Huskies opened the second half of the Northwoods League baseball season Wednesday night in Rochester, Minn., where they put a 9-27 first half to bed by pounding out 13 hits in an 8-7 victory over the Honkers in front of 755 fans.

Duluth’s Alex Michaels led the way with two hits and four RBIs. Austin Christensen added three hits and drove in two runs, while three other Huskies had two hits. Duluth scored four runs in the fifth inning and then survived the Honkers’ four-run seventh.

Steve Villines pitched the final two innings, striking out three, to earn the save, and teammate Kevin Peters went six innings to pick up the win.

The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. today in Rochester.
