Fight card announced

Jungle Boy Boxing announced Tuesday that a pro-am boxing card featuring Duluth boxer Al “The Haitian Temptation” Sands will be held June 13 at Grandma’s Sports Garden.

Sands (13-1, 12 KOs) will make his first defense of his Minnesota state cruiserweight title with a rematch against Harley Kilfian (10-14, 8 KOs) of Menomonie, Wis. Sands earned a fourth-round technical knockout over  Kilfian on Oct. 27, 2012, at Black Bear Casino in Carlton, part of Sands’ current 11-bout winning streak.

Kou Lee takes on Duarn “The Storm” Vue in a featured fight, while Duluth boxer Markus “Hooch” Morris also is expected to fight on the card.


Huskies add trio of Kansas freshmen

With their season fast approaching, the Duluth Huskies on Tuesday announced the signing of three freshmen from Kansas University.

Michael Tinsley has hit .370 as a part-time catcher for the Jayhawks, starting 13 games, while right-handed closer Stephen Villines, a side-arm thrower, crafted a 1.60 ERA in 33⅔ innings out of the bullpen. Starting pitcher Jon Hander, who also can play third base and left field, is 1-1 with a 3.51 ERA.

The Huskies, who advanced to the Northwoods League championship series last summer, open the season May 27 at home against Willmar.
