Today's prep boys hockey playoff game
SUPERIOR (14-10-2) VS. HUDSON (24-1-1)
What: Sectional 1 final
When: 2 p.m.
Where: Amery Ice Arena
Outlook: Superior rolled into 2018 with an 11-2-1 mark before things went south. The Spartans were 3-8-1 to close the regular season, including their first loss to Eau Claire North since the 1998-99 campaign, but have since rebounded to get within a victory of their 38th trip to the state tournament. They've lost to defending state champ Hudson twice this year — 2-1 on Dec. 2 and 4-1 on Jan. 20. Taylor Burger (10 goals, 17 assists, 27 points), Luke Drougas (13-12—25), Cayden Laurvick (8-11—19), Grant Sorenson (9-7—16) and Max Plunkett (12-3—15) are the offensive leaders, though it was Ian Johnson notching his first goal of the season 5:03 into double overtime to propel No. 2 seed Superior past New Richmond 4-3 in the semifinals. Goalie Caden Welch (2.70 goals-against average, .898 save percentage) made 48 saves that night. ... The top-seeded Raiders, who defeated Superior 7-0 in last year's sectional final, opened this season by winning their first 21 games. Behind terrific netminder A.J. Cohen (1.06, .942), they have shut out nine opponents. Ben Lundeen (19-17—36) and Peyton Hanson (19-19—38) are tied for the goal-scoring lead, while Jordon Halverson has 26 assists to go with nine goals.
