Alpine skiing: Canadian pair lead Atmore opening day

Canadians Ryley Remme and Gabrielle Smith took top honors on the opening day of the 40th annual Atmore Memorial Alpine ski race Friday at Spirit Mountain.

Remme completed two runs down Gandy Dancer in 1 minute, 39.36 seconds, more than a second ahead of Cole Puckett of Steamboat Springs, Colo., in 1:40.42 and University of Colorado skier Keilan O'Brien of Eagan, Minn., in 1:40.57.

Hermantown's Austin Danelski was the top local finisher, taking sixth in 1:41.43.

Smith led the women's field, completing two runs down Bear Claw in 1:27.40. St. Olaf College skier Gabby Gencheff was second in 1:28.30, while Isabel Grondin was third in 1:29.01.

Hermantown's Ashley Winberg was the top local finisher, taking sixth in 1:29.88.

The Atmore continues today and Sunday.
