Prep report: Cloquet girls beat Blake on late 3-pointer

Allie Wojtysiak's 3-pointer with 4.1 seconds remaining sent Cloquet to a 60-59 high school girls basketball win over Blake in the first round of the Wood City Classic on Wednesday in Cloquet.

Wojtysiak led all scorers with 20 points, the last three of which rallied the Lumberjacks to their fourth win in five games. They meet Northwestern in today's tournament finale.

Cloquet's Vanna Kelley knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

MIB 70, Pine River-Backus 62

The Rangers overcame a game-high 27 points from the Tigers' Alyssa Semmler to set up a showdown of highly ranked Class A teams at their own holiday tournament.

Mary Burke scored 17 points and Madisen Overbye buried five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points for No. 3 Mountain Iron-Buhl, which meets No. 4 Bigfork at 7:15 p.m. today.

Bigfork's Lexi Becker and Emma Rauzi scored 17 points apiece in a 76-39 win over 10th-ranked and shorthanded Cromwell-Wright.

Pine City 74

The Hunters rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to win their Wood City Classic opener in Cloquet.

Ben Gibson totaled 21 points, Chance Larson added 18 and Caden Rathke had 17 for Denfeld, which has won three straight.

Cloquet 90, Cromwell-Wright 58

Twenty-five of Tim Pokornowski's game-high 31 points came in the first half, and the Lumberjacks rolled past the visiting Cardinals at the Wood City Classic.

Bryce Turnbull chipped in 14 points for Cloquet, while Micah Pocernich tallied 22 for Cromwell-Wright.


Duluth Marshall 6, Anoka 0

Alex Busick stopped all 18 shots he faced, George Grannis pushed his season-long goal total to 21 by scoring twice, and Marshall breezed in a Hilltopper Holiday Classic quarterfinal game at Mars Lakeview Arena.

Marshall moves into today's semifinals vs. Brainerd, which defeated Bemidji on Wednesday. In the other semifinal, Hermantown faces Wayzata in a rematch of the teams' Dec. 1 meeting — a 5-3 Trojans win.

The Hawks blanked Roseville 4-0, while Wayzata skated past Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 5-1.

Alexandria 3, Greenway 2

The third-ranked Raiders were upset in Coleraine when the 11th-ranked Cardinals' Derek Dropik scored 2:18 into overtime.

Minutes earlier, sophomores Mitchell Vekich and Ben Troumbly scored goals late in the third period to bring Greenway back from a 2-0 deficit.


GRG 3, Alexandria 0

Kiya Danielson turned in a 27-save shutout to lift the Lightning at the Edina Classic.

Mady Shaffer, Ellie Tillma and Claire Vekich scored goals for Grand Rapids-Greenway, which was coming off Tuesday's 6-1 loss to Breck.
