Prep report: Hibbing reaches Class AAA baseball semifinals
Hibbing spoiled St. Cloud Tech's perfect high school baseball season with a 9-4 upset victory Thursday in a Minnesota Class AAA state tournament quarterfinal at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
Senior hurler Travis Carruth earned the win against the second-seeded Tigers (24-1), allowing four runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 6 1/3 innings.
Carruth was even more impressive at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Hibbing scored five runs and racked up eight hits in the first three innings against losing pitcher Trevor Koenig, a 6-foot-11 southpaw who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 40th round of the major-league draft earlier this week.
Hibbing's Dylan Mattson had two hits and scored three runs and fellow senior Andrew Mickelson contributed two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Hibbing (18-8) faces Alexandria Area (20-5) in a semifinal at 2:30 p.m. today at Siebert Field.
Legacy Christian Academy 9, Ely 4
The Lions handed the Timberwolves their second straight quarterfinal exit at the Mini Met in Jordan, Minn.
Ely grabbed its only lead after a four-run fourth inning, but second-seeded Legacy Christian Academy (20-4) retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning before adding four insurance runs in the sixth.
Ely walked eight batters and committed five errors, leading to six unearned runs.
Freshman Dalton Shreffler was 3-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and two RBIs to lead Ely.
The Timberwolves (20-8) will play Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Truman (21-4) in a consolation semifinal at 12:30 p.m. today at Chaska Athletic Park in Chaska, Minn.
