Northwoods League: Willmar nips Huskies
Despite collecting nearly twice as many hits, the Huskies fell 4-3 to Willmar in a Northwoods League baseball game Saturday night in front of 593 at Wade Stadium.
Duluth outhit the Stingers 11-6, but left 11 runners on base, including a pair of baserunners on second and third in the ninth inning.
The Huskies committed four errors, bringing their league-leading total to 32. It wasn't a clean game defensively for Willmar either; the Stingers made three errors which led to a pair of Duluth runs.
After trading RBI doubles in the first inning, Willmar took a 3-1 lead on a single and an error in the third. Both Ian Collins and Sam Baier scored on errors in the fourth and seventh innings for Duluth, but a sacrifice fly in the top half of the seventh proved to be the difference for the Stingers (7-5).
First baseman Luke Roskam had two doubles in his Huskies debut.
Duluth starter Ryan Cunningham allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, while a trio of relievers combined to allow one unearned run in relief.
