College baseball: Saints stay alive in NCAAs
Senior Martin Alcoverde threw the first complete-game shutout by a St. Scholastica pitcher in NCAA tournament play Friday to lead the fourth-seeded Saints over eighth-seeded St. Norbert College 2-0 in an elimination game at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Whitewater, Wis.
Alcoverde struck out 13 batters — the most by a Saints pitcher in an NCAA tourney game — for his second complete-game shutout of the season. He allowed just five hits and three walks to the 37 batters he faced.
Senior third baseman Brian Minks in the first and senior outfielder Trevor Bernsdorf in the fourth drove in the Saints' runs. Bernsdorf finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior shortstop Tyler Duex was 3-for-4 with a double and run scored.
The Saints face up to two elimination games today, starting with a 1:15 p.m. contest against the loser of No. 2 Concordia-Chicago and No. 3 Adrian (Mich.) College. A win means the Saints would play again at 7:45 p.m..
