UMD win streak reaches seven

Minnesota Duluth extended its winning streak to seven games with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over Upper Iowa University on Tuesday in Fayette, Iowa.

UMD (14-19 overall, 10-13 NSIC) matched its

regular-season and conference win total from a year ago with a 4-0 victory in game one and a 5-4, 11-inning win in game two.

Sophomore Bo Hellquist allowed a pair of hits in five innings before the bullpen completed the shutout. Junior catcher Beau Goff had a two-run single in the fourth inning and sophomore third baseman Jimmy Heck followed with a two-run double to complete the scoring.

Heck was the star of the second game, going

4-for-4 with two runs scored and a game-tying RBI triple with two outs in the seventh. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the 11th inning and Ryan Lakin singled in Alex Wojciechowski with the winning run.

Upper Iowa fell to 10-20 and 3-13.

St. Scholastica sweeps Northwestern

Freshman infielder Trevor Bernsdorf of Meadowlands had a banner day, going a combined 5-for-10 with two doubles, four runs and five RBIs to lead

St. Scholastica to a 15-3 and 9-1 sweep over Northwestern in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday at Reynolds Field in St. Paul.

The first game was over after seven innings as Tyler Duex added four hits, including three doubles, two runs and three RBIs for the Saints while Jordan Risse struck out seven to earn the win.

Catcher Tyler Henderson had four hits in the second game to lead St. Scholastica (17-10 overall, 9-1 UMAC), while pitchers Sean Imes, Daniel Wood and Kevin Kunik held Northwestern to just four hits. Matt Doss had a hit, walk and run to lead the Eagles (13-12, 9-4).


Chicago Blackhawks recall LeBlanc

Former Hermantown hockey star Drew LeBlanc was one of 13 players recalled by the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old LeBlanc, who won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as a St. Cloud State senior in 2013, appeared in 76 games for the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. He totaled seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points.

LeBlanc signed with Chicago as a free agent last year and appeared in two games with the Blackhawks during the 2013-14 campaign.

Report: Mercyhurst AD to head WCHA

According to a report in the Grand Forks Herald, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association will introduce Mercyhurst senior associate athletic director Aaron Kemp as the league’s new commissioner at a news conference today.

Kemp, a Canisius College graduate, formerly served as an assistant coach for the Canisius men’s team and the Mercyhurst women’s team.

He replaces Sara Martin, who retired at the end of the season.

The WCHA recently replaced former Minnesota Duluth player and athletic director Bruce McLeod as men’s commissioner with former Minnesota Wild

executive Bill Robertson.

St. Scholastica wins 12th straight

Former Duluth Denfeld slugger Kara Warren had two home runs and five RBIs to lead St. Scholastica to a 22-1 victory over North Central and an 8-0 win over Northwestern College in a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference matchups Tuesday at Kenwood Field in Duluth.

In the opener, former Denfeld star Nikki Logergren and Emily Schiro each had four RBIs for the Saints (18-10 overall, 12-0 UMAC), while Rendi Johnson was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Johnson struck out eight and allowed just two hits by North Central (3-20, 1-17).

Warren hit each of her home runs against Northwestern (13-18, 9-6), while Tiff Hudack and Sydney Gordon each had a double and a run scored. Pitcher Chrisi Mizera allowed two hits and struck out eight over five innings.
