College baseball: Wisconsin-Superior senior pitcher Travis Elwood was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week after helping the Yellowjackets win three of four games, including a sweep of second-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Elwood threw eight innings in relief against Stevens Point, giving up three earned runs on six hits in an 8-3 victory. For the season, Elwood is 3-1 with a 2.32 ERA, eight walks and 33 strikeouts in

31 innings.

College softball: St. Scholastica’s Micah McGuinness was named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference pitcher of the week after striking out a career-high 10 batters and allowing three hits in a 6-0 shutout of visiting Bethany Lutheran on Friday.

Community college softball: Mesabi Range’s Megan Preiner was named Minnesota College Athletic Conference player of the week after going 6-for-9 in a doubleheader sweep of Vermilion on Friday. The Eveleth-Gilbert graduate had two home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs on the day.

College track and field: Hermantown graduate Jeremy Peterson was named UMAC men’s athlete of the week after winning both the hammer throw and discus and placing second in the shot put at the Lee Krough Invitational on Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus. His tosses of

150 feet in the discus, 182 feet, 2 inches in the hammer throw and 46-10¾ in the shot put were all personal-best marks in the outdoor season.

  • The Saints’ Jadyn Bonasera also was named UMAC athlete of the week after winning the discus with a throw of 136-5, a program record that beat the rest of the field by nine feet at the Lee Krough Invitational.
