DNT Obituary Guidelines

Note: Private party obituaries will not be processed on Sundays.

Free death notices
Free death notices follow a specific and standard format which includes the deceased’s full name; date of birth and date of death; a dateline so readers know from where the information originates; a one sentence description of the person’s full name, age and the circumstances of their death; and information about person’s service and visitation. Free death notices are posted online free of charge. Logos, photos, websites and “arrangements by …” will no longer be added to free death notices.
The following is an example of exactly how a free death notice will appear (no additional information will be allowed):

John Q. Smith
July 16, 1951 – Aug. 18, 2011
DULUTH – John Q. Smith, 60, of Duluth, died Monday in Solvay Hospice House.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Thursday in Dougherty Funeral Home in Duluth and one hour prior to the service at the church.

PLEASE NOTE: Logos, “Arrangements by”, and websites are considered advertising and don’t qualify for the free notice. If you want them added, it becomes a paid obituary.
(Cost per inch is roughly $22.50, which is approximately nine lines per inch)

Paid obituaries
Paid obituaries are calculated on a by-the-inch basis (rounded to every half-inch of space). All lines and inches in a paid obituary will accrue a charge, including the name headline and the space the photo takes up.

Customers who choose to post their obituary online will be charged an additional $99.
Photos and logos will be charged at the per-inch rate.

The first and last paragraphs of an obituary follow specific formatting guidelines. The information in the middle can be as much or as little as the customer prefers. Charges can be prepaid, charged to a credit/debit card or billed to a funeral home.

Funeral notices

Funeral notices will now basically be a short, paid obit using the same font and type size of an obit.

On-line only obits - $199 charge which would include up to five photos.

Deadline: 4 p.m. weekdays, 3 p.m. weekends and holidays for next day publication.

Send the information to obits@duluthnews.com. Call (218) 723-5200 with any questions.
