Do it: The trout scout

This time of year, open water is scarce, but Wisconsin’s upper Brule River is open, and the big steelhead from Lake Superior are forging upstream to spawning beds. If you paddle the stretch from Stone’s Bridge on Douglas County Highway “S” down to the canoe landing at County Highway “B,” you’ll likely see plenty of trout zipping just beneath your canoe. Allow about four hours to paddle that distance. Take a couple of vehicles, so you’ll have a shuttle back to your car. For more information, search the web for the Brule River State Forest.
