On a cool March morning, Rich Staffon of Cloquet removes unhatched eggs from a wood duck nesting box at the Canosia Wildlife Management Area near Pike Lake. The eggs had been left behind by a hooded merganser. Nesting boxes often prove beneficial to species other than wood ducks, Staffon said. Sam Cook / scook@duluthnews.com
