Hummingbirds are headed north. They often arrive here about Mother’s Day (May 11 this year). Here’s a recipe for filling your feeder: Use one part ordinary white cane sugar to four parts water. Boil the water if you wish, but it’s not necessary. Store unused syrup in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. DNR delays fishing opener in some areas

With spring a week or 10 days behind schedule, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced a delayed fishing opener on some waters to protect spawning concentrations of walleyes. Minnesota’s fishing season opens Saturday. According to a DNR news release, the closed areas include:

ST. PAUL — Plans to allow anglers to fish open water with two lines and to create a new discounted license meant to promote catch-and-release fishing are among natural resource measures before lawmakers with about two weeks remaining in the session.

Northbound gobblers

Minnesota’s spring turkey season opened April 16 and the last of its eight five-day sessions ends May 29. For the first time, turkey hunting zones have pushed north into Carlton County.
